iTunes 11.1 ships with iTunes Radio, Genius Shuffle, Podcast Stations and better iOS 7 sync
Summary: Although iOS 7 is getting
all the hype, Apple also released iTunes 11.1 today with support for
iTunes Radio and several other noteworthy new features.
Here's what's new in iTunes 11.1:
iTunes Radio allows you to stream over 250 DJ-curated, genre-based radio stations or create your own from an artist or song. Adding artists, songs and skipping tracks make stations more intelligent and refined to your taste. Stations are stored in iCloud allowing you to switch devices and keep listening without having to sync. iTunes Radio is free (with ads) and an ad-free version is available to subscribers of iTunes Match. iTunes Radio is only available to U.S. account holders at launch and is also available in iOS 7.
Genius Shuffle is a smarter shuffle that picks songs that go together. It replaces the iTunes DJ feature that Apple removed in iTunes 11 in favor of the Up Next feature.
Podcast Stations allows you to create custom stations of your favorite podcasts that update automatically with new episodes. Your stations, subscriptions, and current play position sync over iCloud to the Podcasts app for iOS.
iOS 7 Sync has been improved. If you still sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to iTunes on the desktop (via USB cable or Wi-Fi) iTunes 11.1 features a better app-management UI (below) that displays multiple home screens in a re-sizable grid that makes it much easier to drag and drop apps between home screens. In addition, iOS folders are now represented as their own home screens in iTunes making it easier to move apps between folders.
iTunes 11.1 is currently available for download from the Apple product page and should be arriving in the Mac App Store soon. (Oh, and it's also available for Windows users, too.)
