‘Fifty Shades of Grey' backlash: Charlie Hunnam, Dakota Johnson casting sparks fan criticism
Avid readers have taken to Twitter with their applause and anger over the casting decisions for the film’s lead roles, Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey.
Dakota Johnson is a third-generation actress, taking after her mother Melanie Griffith and grandmother Tippi Hedren.

There's already fifty shades of backlash for the upcoming "Fifty Shades of Grey" film.

After the erotic trilogy's author EL James announced that actors Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson were chosen to play the leads in the film adaptation, livid fans who've already role played with their favorite actors in mind lashed out at the production team via social media.

One of the film's producers, Dana Brunetti, took to Twitter retweeting and addressing insults hurled at him for the casting choices — prompting him to explain how Hunnam, 33, and Johnson, 23, were chosen.

"There is a lot that goes into casting that isn't just looks," he wrote. "Talent, availability, their desire to do it, chemistry with other actor ..."

Much of the backlash was over the casting of the hunky ‘Sons of Anarchy’ star given that many women had their own fantasy choices for the role of Christian Grey.

"So if your favorite wasn't cast, then it is most likely due to something on that list. Keep that in mind while hating and keep perspective."

His co-producer Michael De Luca also assured fans that Hunnam and Johnson were the right choice.

"Auditions were stunning, incredible chemistry!" he tweeted.

Even James had to post a message addressing the flurry of comments from avid readers.

"To all the supporters, lovers and haters - thank you so much for the passion that you have for this project," she wrote. "You all rock. All of you."

One person delighted with the film's leads — Johnson's mother, actress Melanie Griffith.

It was rumored that James wrote the steamy novels with ‘Twilight’ star Robert Pattinson in mind for the role of Christian Grey, but several readers wanted to see Ian Somerhalder strip on screen as well.

"My beautiful child Dakota has been chosen to play Anna Steele in 50 Shades," she wrote on Twitter.

"Look out world! Here she comes!!! #proudmama."

Johnson, Griffith's daughter with actor Don Johnson, has the leading lady gene running deep in her family. Both Griffith and her mother Tippi Hedren starred in several huge Hollywood flicks like "Working Girl" and Hitchcock's "The Birds."

A good portion of the angry comments revolved around the casting of Hunnam for Christian Grey.

Women hoping for actors Ian Somerhalder or Robert Pattinson to fulfill their fantasies — the latter of which was even reportedly James' choice — didn't approve of the scruffy "Sons of Anarchy" star.
