Speaking with ABC24, a local news affiliate, Lemon emphasized his responsibility as both a journalist and an American to uphold the truth and the principles of the constitution. He stated unequivocally that he does not believe in providing a platform to individuals who spread falsehoods, promote bigotry, incite insurrection, deny elections, or undermine the constitution. For Lemon, to do so would be a failure in fulfilling his journalistic duty.

Regarding his future career plans, Lemon emphasized that he will not be pressured by others' expectations or timelines. Licht's sentiments were echoed in an email sent to CNN staffers, obtained by USA TODAY, where he emphasized Lemon's lasting connection to the CNN family and thanked him for his contributions over the course of his 17-year tenure.

tags: #DonLemon, #interview, #ABC24
#DonLemon, #CNNfiring
#DonLemon, #platforming, #liars, #bigots
#DonLemon, #journalistresponsibility
#DonLemon, #Ramaswamyinterview
#DonLemon, #futurecareerplans
#DonLemon, #termination, #CNN
#CNNCEO, #statement, #DonLemondeparture
#DonLemon, #ABC24, #exclusiveinterview
#DonLemon, #truth, #constitution
Biography Peakhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02980607405037203060noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8659345486365168479.post-50126374896572575522023-06-19T01:37:00.004-07:002023-06-19T01:39:02.467-07:00Wyndham Clark emerges as a prominent figure and secures victory as a major champion at the US Open.
Wyndham Clark emerges as a prominent figure and secures victory as a major champion at the US Open.

Standing alongside him in the final group on Sunday were Rory McIlroy, a renowned golf talent seeking to end a perplexing nine-year major championship drought, and Rickie Fowler, a native of Southern California who had recently emerged from a three-year slump and was poised to secure his first major win.

Carrying his late mother's message of "Play big" and fueled by his belief in his ability to compete with any player on any stage, Clark faced the challenge head-on.

There was no stage grander than the U.S. Open, set on the outskirts of Beverly Hills. It was here that Clark displayed remarkable composure, executing crucial saves and delivering a signature shot that granted him control. His nerves remained steady as he fended off McIlroy's charge, ultimately clinching victory and attaining the status of a major champion.

"I have always felt that I belong on this stage," Clark expressed following his final round score of an even-par 70, securing a one-shot win over McIlroy. "Even when people didn't know who I was a couple of years ago, I still believed that I could compete against the world's best players."

Remarkably, Clark secured this triumph in only his seventh major appearance, a significant improvement over his previous best performance, a tie for 75th place. It came a mere six weeks after his maiden PGA Tour victory at Quail Hollow.

"The journey has been faster than I anticipated, especially in terms of the mental growth and changes I have experienced," Clark reflected. "However, I have always believed that I am one of the finest players in the world. This win validates my faith."

The climax of the tournament unfolded with Clark facing two putts from a daunting 60-foot distance on the 18th hole at Los Angeles Country Club. With unyielding determination, the 29-year-old golfer pumped his fist when the ball settled just a foot away from the hole. He effortlessly tapped it in for a par, perhaps the simplest shot he encountered throughout the day.

The wake he left behind comprised a gathering of illustrious names.

Scottie Scheffler, the world's top-ranked player, failed to catch up. British Open champion Cameron Smith also fell short. Meanwhile, Fowler, who found himself in the final group of a major for the third time, struggled early on, accruing three bogeys within the opening seven holes. Unable to make up ground, Fowler finished with a disappointing 75.

The day undeniably belonged to Clark, who exhibited remarkable composure, unwavering self-belief, and an exceptional short game. He also left a lasting impression with a fairway metal shot that he will forever cherish.

Already holding a two-shot lead, Clark found himself merely a yard away from an easy birdie on the par-5 eighth hole when his approach struck a steep bank of the barranca to the left. With limited visibility of his golf ball, he took a mighty swing, propelling it a few inches deeper into the thick grass.

Once again, he struck the ball, this time sending it over the green, leaving him with a treacherous 70-foot putt on a firm and intimidating surface. Demonstrating remarkable skill, he chipped the ball to within 3 feet, escaping with a bogey.

"That crucial up-and-down was the turning point of the tournament," Clark acknowledged.

Similar shots followed throughout his round. On the par-3 ninth, he found himself on the bunker's edge, opting to chip away from the flag and utilizing the slope expertly to land the ball within 7 feet, another pivotal save. Then, facing a challenging lie to the left of the 11th green, Clark deftly clipped a pitch shot to within 4 feet, securing a crucial par.

The highlight of Clark's performance came on the par-5 14th hole. With a fairway metal in hand and 282 yards to the green, he unleashed a magnificent shot that soared 20 feet from the hole, setting up an easy two-putt birdie. This stellar play extended Clark's lead to three shots with just four holes remaining.

However, the pressure mounted as Clark stumbled with a bogey on the demanding par-3 15th hole. To make matters worse, he found himself in a bunker left of the 16th fairway, and frustration got the best of him as he struck his putter in disappointment upon missing a crucial 7-foot par putt. With his lead now reduced to a mere one shot, Clark displayed resilience and determination.

Left with a challenging up-and-down from the left of the 17th green, Clark showcased nerves of steel as he successfully maintained his lead.

The USGA had allowed a multitude of spectators to encircle the fairway leading up to the 18th green, creating an electrifying atmosphere for Clark's final moments. Fowler, still in pursuit of his first major victory, joined Clark on the 18th green, offering his congratulations and heartfelt words.

Returning to the scene where his parents had married at Riviera Country Club and with memories of his late mother resonating throughout the week, Clark couldn't help but feel a sense of deep emotion. As he gazed at the sky, tears welled up in his eyes, and he covered his face with his cap, overcome with joy and gratitude.

Reflecting on his mother's influence and the struggles he faced a decade ago when contemplating leaving the sport, Clark shared his heartfelt sentiments. "I wish my mom could be here to celebrate with me, to embrace her and revel in this moment together. But I know she would be immensely proud."

For McIlroy, it marked another disappointment in his quest to end his nine-year major drought. Despite opening with a birdie, he failed to find another throughout the remainder of his round. McIlroy's final round of 16 pars and a solitary bogey would typically be sufficient to win a U.S. Open, but not on this occasion. With yet another near-miss, McIlroy faced further inquiries about when he would secure his next major championship.

Scheffler, who had been in contention throughout the tournament, faltered with a series of missed putts on the back nine, leaving him in third place. Fowler, despite his record-breaking 23 birdies during the event, encountered a rough start and was unable to mount a comeback, ultimately finishing with a disappointing 75.

Ultimately, it was Wyndham Clark's day to shine. He exhibited remarkable poise, unwavering self-belief, and an extraordinary short game. His fairway metal shot on the 14th hole will forever be etched in his memory. With a final score of 10-under 270, Clark not only claimed the title of major champion but also earned a substantial $3.6 million prize. Additionally, his triumph propelled him to the second position in the Ryder Cup standings, solidifying his status as one of the game's elite players.

Australian golfer Cameron Smith closed with a solid 67 to secure fourth place, while Tommy Fleetwood's impressive rounds of 63 in the U.S. Open's history led to a tie for fifth with Fowler and Min Woo Lee, who also shot a 67. Fleetwood's remarkable achievement of shooting 63 in both the final rounds of the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills in 2018 and now at Los Angeles Country.

tags: #WyndhamClark, #Golf, #PGA, #GolfPlayer, #GolfSwing, #WyndhamClark, #golfchampion
Biography Peakhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02980607405037203060noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8659345486365168479.post-19540436830878849172023-06-12T01:51:00.001-07:002023-06-12T01:51:44.022-07:00UFC 290 main card lineup official
<span style="color: #343541; font-family: Söhne, ui-sans-serif, system-ui, -apple-system, "Segoe UI", Roboto, Ubuntu, Cantarell, "Noto Sans", sans-serif, "Helvetica Neue", Arial, "Apple Color Emoji", "Segoe UI Emoji", "Segoe UI Symbol", "Noto Color Emoji"; white-space-collapse: preserve;">UFC 290 main card lineup official

UFC 290's main card lineup has been confirmed and it promises an exciting event.

Apple today released iTunes 11.1
as a direct download from its website. The biggest new feature is
iTunes Radio, Apple's brand-new music streaming service that competes
directly with Pandora and others.
Here's what's new in iTunes 11.1:
iTunes Radio allows
you to stream over 250 DJ-curated, genre-based radio stations or create
your own from an artist or song. Adding artists, songs and skipping
tracks make stations more intelligent and refined to your
taste. Stations are stored in iCloud allowing you to switch devices and
keep listening without having to sync. iTunes Radio is free (with ads)
and an ad-free version is available to subscribers of iTunes Match. iTunes Radio is only available to U.S. account holders at launch and is also available in iOS 7.
Genius Shuffle is a smarter shuffle that picks songs
that go together. It replaces the iTunes DJ feature that Apple removed
in iTunes 11 in favor of the Up Next feature.
Podcast Stations allows you to create custom
stations of your favorite podcasts that update automatically with new
episodes. Your stations, subscriptions, and current play position sync
over iCloud to the Podcasts app for iOS.
iOS 7 Sync has been improved. If you still sync your
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to iTunes on the desktop (via USB cable or
Wi-Fi) iTunes 11.1 features a better app-management UI (below) that
displays multiple home screens in a re-sizable grid that makes it much
easier to drag and drop apps between home screens. In addition, iOS
folders are now represented as their own home screens in iTunes making
it easier to move apps between folders.

iTunes 11.1 is currently available for download from the Apple product page and should be arriving in the Mac App Store soon. (Oh, and it's also available for Windows users, too.)
News has just emerged that actor Kristen Stewart was apparently paid a gigantic sum of $500,000 in exchange for a 15-minute meeting with a Middle Eastern prince. The Twilight star received the full amount in cash when she met the unidentified prince, along with his team of bodyguards, at Madison Square Garden in December 2012, the Mirror reported.

However, Stewart didn’t keep the money. It was donated to help raise funds for Hurricane Sandy’s relief efforts. Hollywood movie executive Harvey Weinstein revealed that he was the one who helped negotiate the deal between the prince and the actor, according to the Times of India.

Weinstein, who is currently promoting a documentary based on the Hurricane Sandy benefit concert at the Toronto Film Festival, said Stewart’s immediate response was, “How much?,” when he revealed the offer.

The prince apparently had to shell out over $33,333 a minute, which is around $555 a second, to interact with Stewart.

Published in The Express Tribune, September 16th, 2013.
RoboCop Trailer Unleashed! Here Are Five Things You Need to Know About the Cyborg Reboot

He's part man, part machine and all remake.

The trailer for the long-delayed RoboCop reboot has finally hit the web, and by the looks of it, MGM and Columbia's 2014 version is taking its cues right out of the Christopher Nolan playbook.

E! News runs down the five biggest differences between the new, José Padilha-directedRoboCop—as seen here—versus Paul Verhoeven's 1987 sci-fi pulp classic:

1. RoboCop Begins: By putting an up-and-coming star into the main role, surrounding him with an all-star cast of acclaimed character actors and shooting for an expected PG-13 rating, Padilha apparently hopes to replicate the massive critical and commercial success Nolan earned with his Dark Knight trilogy. While that may win the franchise a wider, more family-friendly audience, a watered-down, less bloody RoboCop runs the risk of alienating the diehards that found the Rated-R original such a guilty pleasure and made it a box office hit. Already, Netizens are slamming the reboot as an uninspired Hollywood retread and it will be up to the Brazilian filmmaker best known for the foreign documentary Bus 174 to prove them wrong.

YouTube

2. Murphy Lives! In the first film, Peter Weller starred as Detroit police officer Alex Murphy, who in the year 2028 is pronounced dead after being brutally attacked by crime boss Clarence Boddicker and his thugs, only to be resurrected as the robot crime fighter. In this one, Murphy is portrayed by The Killing's Joel Kinnaman, but this time, his character survives a car bombing. Murphy's fate is also a subtle allusion to the current plight of many American servicemen injured in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

YouTube

3. It's Got Batman! Furthering the Batman analogy, Padilha casts Michael Keaton in the role of villain Raymond Sellars, the CEO of OmniCorp., the all-powerful corporation that creates our cyborg hero. Of course, Sellars aims to use Murphy to his own nefarious ends by turning him into a weapon he can deploy at his disposal. Fanboys have decried the filmmaker's decision to lose the old school silver metal armor suit in favor of all-black "tactical" look. And who better to give RoboCop that big-screen makeover than the guy who played the original Dark Knight in Tim Burton's 1989 Batman?

YouTube

4. Did We Mention Gary Oldman?! The erstwhile Commissioner Gordon plays the pivotal role of Dr. Dennett Norton, the scientist who puts humpty dumpty Murphy back together again after the latter sustains "4th degree burns over 80 percent of his body," as he notes. Once again, Oldman is seemingly playing a good guy, who we imagine will likely serve as a father figure/mentor for our protagonist's journey (which the 1987 version didn't have).Morgan Freeman, alas, isn't in it, but joining Oldman is Samuel L. Jackson as a media mogul and the ever-creepy Jackie Earle Haley playing Maddox, a military man who trains RoboCop. And based on this teaser, we've a gut feeling the latter's character is going to be doing Sellars' dirty work the way Kurtwood Smith's Clarence did the same for RonnyCox's OCP President Dick Jones in the original.

YouTube

5. So Long Anne Lewis: The new RoboCop also gets rid of Murphy's female partner, Officer Anne Lewis (Nancy Allen) in favor of a male one in the form of Michael K. Williams. Presumably that's because the film delves into the family drama more with the addition of Abbie Cornish as his wife, Clara, and John Paul Ruttan as his son, David.

Despite these differences, if the 2014 RoboCop has one thing going for it in the vein of its predecessor: there's plenty of action to be had as the robot cop battles a slew of fellow Iron Men in crime-ridden Detroit (which, by the way, just filed for bankruptcy in real life). No word however if the clunky ED-209 will be back (could the below pic be it?).

YouTube

Whether moviegoers buy the reboot for a dollar—or pony up full price admission for that matter—we'll have to wait and see when RoboCop hits theaters on Feb. 7, 2014

former Baltimore Ravenslinebacker Ray Lewis truly believes there was a blackout conspiracy during last year's Super Bowl, I wonder if he also believes that rookie Brynden Trawick was paid to take out Ravens wideout Jacoby Jones on Thursday night.

Jones was a thorn in the side of the Denver Broncos in last year's epic divisional round playoff game, catching a 70-yard game-tying touchdown pass just before the end of regulation. He would not receive an opportunity to repeat such acts during Thursday's season opener, thanks to Mr. Trawick and a bizarre special teams mishap.

As Jones was readying to field the fair catch on a second-quarter punt, Trawick collided with Jones at near full speed. Jones remained on the ground in pain for an extended period and apparently suffered a knee injury. Mike Klis of The Denver Post tweeted:

Jones, who became the Ravens' No. 2 receiver following the offseason departure of Anquan Boldin, had caught three passes for 24 yards before exiting the game.

With Jones out, the Ravens will likely look to rookie receiver Marlon Brown to complement Torrey Smith and Brandon Stokley in multiple-receiver sets.

Brown, a 6'4", 213-pound undrafted rookie out of Georgia, will now have an opportunity to make a name for himself, but he may have a difficult time replicating the dynamic Jones in the offense.

The 29-year-old Jones is the only proven deep threat, aside from Smith, currently on the Ravens roster, and Baltimore may be forced to rely on a more conservative offense with him out of the lineup.

Of course, the Ravens can always lean on Ray Rice, Bernard Pierce and the running game to move the football. However, Brown is going to have to find a way to deliver if the team is to have any realistic chance against some of the league's top offenses.

Hopefully, Jones' injury will not become a long-term setback and Trawick's mistake won't be sparking any new conspiracy theories.

Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. will make more guaranteed money than anyone in the history of boxing when he faces Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on Sept. 14, proving his nickname is more fact than fiction.

For less than an hour of work, Mayweather will pocket a record $41.5 million for his junior middleweight title bout at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, a total that could go up, provided he gets a cut of the Pay-Per-View profits, according to Forbes.com. The 36-year-old, who often plays the heel in his bouts, was already the highest paid athlete for any sport over a 12-month period last year, according to Forbes, and he could claim that mantle again after his earnings are tallied up against Alvarez.

Mayweather, who often travels with large wads of cash and wagers big on sports, took home a guaranteed purse of $32 million for easily out-boxing Robert Guerrero this past May (though Mayweather fought with a sore hand), making his earnings for 2013 a whopping $73.5 million for just two bouts. Not bad work if you can get it.

Mayweather's payday is the largest since Evander Holyfield netted $33 million for his rematch against Mike Tyson in 1997. Mayweather also took home a guaranteed $32 million against Miguel Cotto last year.
The bout with the 23-year-old Alvarez is Mayweather's second since leaving HBO and signing a lucrative 30-month deal for six bouts with Showtime/CBS that could give him hundreds of millions of dollars. Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, was traveling on Thursday and couldn't be reached immediately. Mayweather also wasn't available. Schaefer and Mayweather advisor Leonard Ellerbe visited the Forbes.com offices on Wednesday in Manhattan to disclose the milestone.
In recent weeks, Schaefer has suggested the Sept. 14 show could surpass the all-time pay-per-view record of 2.44 million buys and generate profits greater than the previous high of $130 million. Those were both achieved when Mayweather beat Oscar De La Hoya in 2007.

Schaefer has tempered those expectations a bit, saying the PPV record might be a bit of a stretch, but he's still optimistic.

The availability of high-def broadcasts has allowed some carriers to raise the price tag of the Showtime PPV to $74.95, according to Forbes.com.
Demand for tickets has been rabid with the 16,200-seat MGM Grand selling out within hours, breaking the all-time live-gate record for a fight card with $19.1 million, exceeding the previous record of $18,419,200, according to ESPN.com. Mayweather could claim a share of the PPV revenue depending on the overall numbers at the end of the night.

Meanwhile, Danny Garcia and Lucas Matthysse are facing each other in the co-feature in a bout that's equally as exciting but that's been overshadowed by Mayweather and his money.

This would’ve been the best retaliation of all for those fireworks at Fenway last month. But the Yankees’ remarkable comeback against Boston Thursday night crumbled when Mariano Rivera blew a save in the ninth inning and the Red Sox won in the 10th.

Along the way, there was a disputed check-swing call that allowed Shane Victorino to then single in the winning run in Boston’s 9-8 victory, a poor throw by Austin Romine on Quintin Berry’s key steal, a bizarre baserunning sequence for Alfonso Soriano, a bummer of a start by Ivan Nova and no payback for last month’s Ryan Dempster flap.

And, oddly, swaths of empty seats at the Stadium for the opener of a crucial four-game series loaded with playoff implications for two bitter rivals.

It all added up to a night of temporary euphoria that soured into angst for the Yankees, who are desperately seeking a route into the playoffs. They started the night hoping they could still be a factor in the division race, although they are now nine games behind first-place Boston. They remain 2.5 games behind Tampa Bay in the race for the second wild card.

“It’s a tough loss, there’s no doubt about it, but we’ve got to bounce back,” Joe Girardi said. “You can’t feel sorry for yourself. I like the way our guys fought back and if we continue to play like that, we’re going to win a lot of games.”

The Yankees had rallied from a 7-2 deficit with a six-run seventh inning and seemed a lock to win after David Robertson threw a scoreless eighth and Rivera came jogging in from the bullpen for the ninth.

“At that point, I think we got the game, but they never gave up,” Soriano said.

But Rivera, pitching for the third consecutive day, suffered his sixth blown save of the season after getting the first two outs of the ninth. He allowed a single to Mike Napoli and then saw pinch-runner Berry steal second and go to third on Romine’s throwing error. Romine later blamed himself for the steal, saying he held the ball too long.

Stephen Drew followed with a broken-bat RBI single to right that tied the score at 8.

Rivera, who had gotten four outs in Wednesday’s win over the White Sox, said his recent workload was not a factor. “I was fine, it wasn’t an issue,” he stressed. “A broken bat over (Robinson) Cano’s head, you can’t do nothing. It’s part of the game.

“It was a tough one. We just have to forget about it and come in tomrorrow.”

Victorino’s winner came after he had checked his swing on what would’ve been strike three. Television replays showed he broke his wrists, but plate umpire Rob Drake did not call it, and when Drake asked first-base ump Joe West for help, West said Victorino didn’t swing, too.

The Yankees, not surprisingly, thought differently, and pitcher Joba Chamberlain was ejected by West after expressing his opinion. “I do (think he swung),” Girardi said. “It’s frustrating, because I thought he went. But you have to be able to overcome things.”

Added Romine: “I thought he swung. That was a pretty big key moment in the game, that he swung.”

On Victorino’s hit, the Yankees had a potential play at the plate, but Ellsbury scored. Romine said he didn’t get a good glove on the ball.

“Those are tough plays,” Girardi said.

Nova, who was the AL Pitcher of the Month for August, didn’t resemble that pitcher Thursday night. His pitch count soared so quickly — he threw 47 pitches in the third inning alone — that he lasted only four innings, giving up three runs. He was replaced by Preston Claiborne to start the fifth, but Claiborne was awful, allowing three runs without retiring a batter.

The Yankees trailed, 7-2, entering the seventh, and many fans from the announced crowd of 40,481 had already left. But the Yanks erupted for six runs. Lyle Overbay, dumped by the Red Sox in spring training, delivered the go-ahead hit, a two-run single.

In the ninth, the Yanks had a final chance when Soriano walked and was credited with a stolen base after foiling a pickoff. But he was picked off second.

Heading into the game, most of the baseball world was wondering whether the Yankees would retaliate for Dempster’s actions, including Major League Baseball.

Nothing happened, other than another tight rivalry game.

“It’s a little tough,” Soriano said of the loss. “But we don’t have to put our heads down. There are three more games left, and I hope we come with the same energy and same attitude.”

Samsung's new Galaxy Gear smartwatch is on the cutting edge of a growing trend of wearable technology.

When it comes to smartwatches, the future ain't what it used to be. Can Samsung change that?

A high-tech watch, such as the two-way radio and TV wristwatches used by Dick Tracy in the comics more than four decades ago, was among those futuristic devices foreshadowed in science fiction. But along the way, the smartphone became all-powerful.

Now Samsung, already a major smartphone power, has introduced its new Galaxy Gear smartwatch with hopes of making the watch a must-wear device again.

The tech giant revealed the watch and its new Note 3 big-screen smartphone Wednesday at the IFA electronics show in Berlin. Black-jacketed bouncers checked credentials of a few hundred journalists and industry affiliates who piled into the Tempodrom, a high-ceiling roundhouse auditorium near central Berlin.

Chamber music played before the new products were revealed on a really big screen stretched about 180 degrees around the center of the room. On stage, Samsung research team leader Pranav Mistry deemed the Galaxy Gear as "something out of science fiction .... (that) reinvents a centuries old product."

Perhaps, but it has some hurdles to surmount, says futurist Paul Saffo, who teaches long-range forecasting at Stanford University.

"At the moment, the only people who wear things on their wrist are people old enough to have an AARP card. Students look at wristwatches today the same way that their grandparents looked at pocket watches in the middle of the last century, as an unbelievably old-fashioned thing," Saffo says. "But that is about to change."
Samsung's Galaxy Gear, due to hit the market later this month for a reported $299, will let wearers access texts, e-mails, news, weather and music from their Samsung portable devices. That's similar to what you can do with the Pebble watch, released earlier this year. And the Galaxy Gear responds to voice commands as does the Martian Watch, released just over two months ago.

Sony has its own SmartWatch 2 out this month, and analysts expect Apple and Google to chime in on the category. Smartwatches fit into a growing wearable device market that research firm Gartner estimates will hit $10 billion by 2015.

Whether Samsung's device becomes a mainstream winner remains to be seen, Saffo says. But eventually, "A whole new generation is about to rediscover that a wrist is a useful place to put a device," he says.

Not all consumers will think it's time to rejoin the watch-wearing crowd, despite the new devices' features, says P.J. McNealy of Digital World Research.

"You already have multiple things you can check the time on," McNealy says. "Your smartphone, your iPad, your PC and the wall. Having another device such as a watch just means it's a more crowded field."

There will be those who like the idea of a smaller screen to use beyond the progressively larger options provided by phones, tablets and laptops, he says. "A 2- or 3-inch smartwatch screen is filling out the product portfolio."

Samsung is smart to tout how the Galaxy Gear can help users get more out of their larger-display devices, says Gartner research director Angela McIntyre.

"These larger devices are bulky to take in and out of bags to frequently check calls and messages," she says. "Smartwatches are accessories to smartphones and phablets."

However, McNealy notes, smartwatches have failed before. In 2004, Fossil and others teamed with Microsoft on new SPOT (Smart Personal Objects Technology) watches that displayed news, weather and messages. But time ran out on them four years later.

At the time, few consumers were ticked off.

Microsoft said it had reached an agreement to acquire the handset and services business of Nokia for about $7.2 billion, in an audacious effort to transform Microsoft’s business for a mobile era that has largely passed it by.

Late Monday, Microsoft and Nokia said 32,000 Nokia employees would join Microsoft as a result of the all-cash deal, which is meant to turn the Finnish mobile phone pioneer into the engine for Microsoft’s mobile efforts.

Stephen Elop, the former Microsoft executive who was running Nokia until the deal was signed, will rejoin Microsoft after the transaction closes, setting him up as a potential successor to Steven A. Ballmer, Microsoft’s chief executive. Mr. Ballmer has said he will retire from the company within 12 months.

“This agreement is really a bold step into the future for Microsoft,” Mr. Ballmer said in a telephone interview from Finland. “We’re excited about the talent capabilities it will bring to Microsoft.”

The deal, which was first broached between Microsoft and Nokia executives in February, is the latest transformation of the 150-year-old Finnish company. Nokia began life as a conglomerate making products like rubber boots and car tires before reinventing itself in the 1980s as the world’s largest manufacturers of cellphones.

Nokia’s once mighty position in the mobile phone business has been lost, as the industry shifted to the era of the smartphone. Samsung and Apple divide nearly all of the profits in the global smartphone business now.

Nokia’s fall has been most spectacular in Asia, a region that its phones once dominated. As recently as 2010, the company had a 64 percent share of the smartphone market in China, according to Canalys, a research firm. By the first half of this year, that had plunged to 1 percent.

Risto Siilasmaa, Nokia’s interim chief executive, said on Tuesday that the sale of the handset business was the logical step in the company’s evolution but still pulled on his heartstrings.

“Selling a business is sometimes the right cause of action, but it’s emotionally complicated,” Mr. Siilasmaa said.

At a cellphone store in central London on Tuesday, Geoffrey Widdows, a 33-year-old engineer, said he had once been a devoted Nokia fan but now preferred Android phones because of the greater choice of apps available on phones from companies like Samsung and HTC.

“Everyone had a Nokia when I was growing up,” he said. “You just don’t see them around a lot anymore.”

A megadeal between Nokia and Microsoft is something that pundits and analysts have speculated about for years, after Mr. Elop joined Nokia and signed a pact with Microsoft in February 2011 to standardize the software company’s Windows Phone operating system.

The cellphone fortunes of the two companies have become closely intertwined since that agreement, but the relationship has done little to turn either company into a leader in the mobile business. Handsets running Windows Phone accounted for only 3.7 percent of smartphone shipments in the second quarter, according to the technology research firm IDC.

Nokia remains the second-largest shipper of mobile phones in the world, after Samsung, but that is largely because of lower-end feature phones, from which consumers are moving away. Nokia is no longer among the top five makers of smartphones.

A big question is whether Microsoft and Nokia will succeed as one company where they have not as close partners. Mr. Ballmer said Microsoft and Nokia had not been as agile separately as they would be jointly, citing how development could be slowed down when intellectual property rights were held by two different companies.
